It funny because everyone talks about the bits of aero that we can see when it's the aero that we can't see that really matters. Side pods bla bla bla. I know that it's all about getting the air flow to the diffuser but does it matter as much as everyone is letting on? Suspension, under floor, and diffuser is where the magic is.

I don't think Merc got lost in a cul-de-sac aero wise I think they just didn't have an adequate suspension, Red Bull have a suspension that's good enough to provide a stable ride height for the aero to be consistent and not peaky as it was for Merc

Whilst this does look impressive, it still seems to me that their biggest advantage the past 2 years has been the suspension/ride. Most teams have now arrived at similar solutions to them for this so I’m hopeful of a competitive season compared to last year. The sidepods is an extreme iteration of the trend they set last year - the point is to get as large an undercut as possible, and any intake requirements on the top surface of the section is going to restrict that. just think of it as pulling the bottom lip all the way to the top of the legality box, but needed an intake elsewhere - the next most logical place is thin and upright, where it impacts the undercut the least.
The mercedes similarity is just a coincidence - Merc followed a very different philosophy to arrive at that design (far smaller sidepods with much less undercut).

The bulk of Redbull's success ... is underneath the car .. and it balanced layout & suspension.
Mercedez had an unbalanced car with the driver too far forward and subsequently poorly designed underpinnings. The W15 is essentially Mec's version of the RB and should have been the the W13. It will get closer to the RB this season . but Redbull has only improved the design from 2022 with a significant jump last year.
RB is now simply tweaking the design by trying so of what Merc has been doing with its shit last two cars. It will keep it's lead ... but hopefully Merc is much closer

If on the other hand this is legit and it works to how Merc wanted it, then that is the ultimate embarrassment. Equally shows where they were not creative enough to think of this. I imagine if Merc wanted to they could retrofit the sidepod inlets to match RB and have all the other understanding already to back them up. Can't wait for Bahrain!!
