Anthony Davidson Previews WEC's 2023 Hypercar Battle

????

The 2023 WEC season kicks off in Sebring, so we sent Anthony Davidson to Peugeot to drive the Peugeot 9x8 Simulator, to see how it feels to get behind the (digital) wheel of the rear-wingless hypercar. Joined by Gary Watkins, they also discuss the new roster of Peugeot, Toyota, Porsche, Ferrari and more, and how it's looking like the World Endurance Championship is stronger than ever. 0:00 The Peugeot 9x8 2:56 Peugeot's Power 5:29 A Unique Hypercar 7:38 WEC 2023's Competition 8:31 Toyota's Strength 9:45 Ferrari Joins the Battle 10:18 Porsche's Challenge 11:13 2023's Fight #wec #peugeot #anthonydavisdon FOLLOW us online: Website: https://www.autosport.com/ Facebook: http://facebook.com/AUTOSPORT Twitter: https://twitter.com/autosport Instagram: http://instagram.com/autosport Thanks for watching - please like, share and comment, and subscribe!

Hard to get excited by a new top class prototype car which is heavier and less agile than the cars it’s replacing.

Hope Toyota (world’s most boring car) gets beaten to a pulp

Had the pleasure to meet Ant in Singapore for the F1. What a gentleman, gave us all the time in the world and respect to stop and have a chat 👍

Those hypercars are about 100kg too heavy maybe even 150kg.

Not sure if it's the hairline, but can't believe Anthony is 43 already :D

One more concern about Balance of Performance ... it permits "putting a thumb on the scales." Say, hypothetically, the ACO or FIA wanted a French car to win ... all that's necessary is to adjust the BOP. I know the French would "never do such a thing." If Colin Chapman were still alive he might have some interesting thoughts on that. Ah, the good old days. Watching the ACO scrutineer (or maybe screwtineer) the Lotus 23 at LeMans. Priceless!
@michaeldelaney7271 Says:
Regarding Balance of Performance ... Years ago, we had some disappointing experiences with BOP here in the U.S. Audi used to win races with a heavily modified production Quattro against purpose-built tube-frame racers. So, the organizers penalized Audi again and again, trying to give an American brand an advantage. When they couldn't compete anymore Audi switched to a "silhouette" car like their competitors and started winning again. There was a great interview with Has Stuck (at Long Beach?) where he was asked about all the handicaps Audi had been dealt (smaller wheels, ever increasing weight, smaller turbos, etc.). He interrupted the reporter and said something like "they can do whatever they want, we'll win anyway." If I remember correctly, it was raining and they did win with the aid of their production-based Quattro AWD. It's nice to see engineering excellence rewarded now and then. Maybe the ACO & FIA could consider the WEC a SPORT again someday and not just another SHOW like NASCAR? Or, maybe they would like to go to a One-Design Formula like Indycar and just stick on manufacturer's logo's for each team?

We saw with Glickenhaus how hard it is to be competitive with one car. I think Cadillac will have a tough time with that.
@mynameissport Says:
Whilst we should be excited there needs to be caution. Whether the class will not end up being an arms race, would costs be under control and more importantly can BOP be fair especially with ACO / FIA running it as for the last couple of years have not done well to balance it. We don't want to be another Toyota one man show all over again like the last couple of years. But if it works out it would be a great time for sportscar racing.

Brilliant video.
@ierbutza21 Says:
Are they on the same level as the lmp1audi/ toyota/porsche used to be or is this a slower "new amazing gen" to let yanks run at lm?
@GreatistheWorld Says:
This was a treat, we so rarely get insight into the distinct character of what these cars are like to drive. AD is uniquely positioned to both talk about it articulately and also place direct experience in recent historical context. Killed it
@peugeotsportofficial Says:
Thank you for visiting! 👊
@Atticvs32 Says:
Which sim is that based on? Peugeot confirmed they built the car into an AC-based platform of theirs (I'm sure its custom), but AC doesn't have Le Mans officially. (Again, could've been custom-built for them, or it could be based on a different platform altogether)
@acegarr22 Says:
I'm really excited. Finally it's not only Toyota anymore. This WEC season is going to be amazing
@michaeldelaney7271 Says:
It's great to finally see some real variety of cars in a sports car championship. But, Balance of Performance is a horrible idea. It rewards poor design and performance and penalizes excellence.

9X8 by far the best looking car on hypercar grid. Peugeot doing god's work making endurance racing interesting (visually at least)

@procatprocat9647 Says:
4wd is useless at high speed, it only brings benefit at low speed. I get the layout challenges but this is poor for track performance

Its easy to forget this is technically an interview with a driver. It's a pleasure to listen to thanks to Anthony's skill as an orator, honed through years of work as an F1 TV presenter.
@djoetma Says:
Absolutely ridiculous that some of the big manufacturers aren't building an LMH and will use a LMDh instead. Porsche, Lamborghini, Alpine, BMW, Cadillac are a disgrace. Even teams like Glickenhaus, ByKolles and Isotta Fraschini are building a LMH. Yet the mentioned manufacturers will use a standard LMP2-based chassis.
@procatprocat9647 Says:
Ant had nothing good to say about this car 😢
@tjitse3916 Says:
Looking forward to it! ❤ Love the endurance concept of racing. Have actually done the 24 hours in gaming long ago.
