F1 2023's Testing Tech - Who Upgraded What and Why?

????

Now we've seen 2023's F1 race cars on track, the actual aero tech behind the speed cannot be hidden any longer. We've seen various front wing designs, floor alterations, engine shelves and even more development into the sidepod concepts, so Jon Noble is joined by Matt Somerfield to discuss everything we've seen leading into the Bahrain Grand Prix and the 2023 F1 season. 0:00 The Latest Tech 1:24 Front Wing 4:59 Sidepod Types 6:19 Unique Sidepods 7:17 Engine Shelves 8:35 Porpoising / Bouncing 9:51 Future Tech #f1 #tech #formula1 FOLLOW us online: Website: https://www.autosport.com/ Facebook: http://facebook.com/AUTOSPORT Twitter: https://twitter.com/autosport Instagram: http://instagram.com/autosport Thanks for watching - please like, share and comment, and subscribe!

6:08 It is not either zero or half of pod because pod exist. You can say it is actually a vertical pod.
@rafaelrodrigues9260 Says:
Wait... Hasn't Make Eliot just said at the end of testing, when interviewed by Ted Kravitz, that they won't bring a different solution from their "zero pod" but rather an evolution of that?!?! Meaning, there will still be 3 different concepts in the foreseeable future.

Really simple explanation of a complicated subject. Thanks for distilling it.

thanks 🙂

A good concise Summary with good Subtitles for we Deaf F1 Fans, Thank You. It will be fascinating to see how many "Red Bulls" real or cloned are taking part in 3 months time!
@peterjones6321 Says:
More tech please, and particularly if you can do a piece on the differences in the powertrains between engine suppliers. Where is Honda getting its performance edge from? What difference are there fundamentally between different powertrains?
@fienmen Says:
This is a fantastic video that needs a better title imo.

I'm sure Elliott said to Kravitz on Saturday they aren't copying anyone?

Merc are gonna make alot of people look foolish this weekend 😆

love the tech content

NO Merc haven't said it's going Mike Elliot told Sky's Ted on camera

Would like to understand more about the underfloor and aero tunnels, and the difference in concepts between the teams. Especially since a lot of the performance of these cars comes from there
@j1jem Says:
Is it just me, is the full-length RB19 side-pod undercut now more reminiscent of the launch spec AMR22 than the AMR23 arrangement is of the RB18, especially with the gullies? (Love the tech content BTW!)

Please more videos about F1. I need it!

Alonso vs. Hamilton revival this weekend!

Mercedes are not getting rid of their "zero pod / slim pod" they are Re-working and developing the idea to see if they gain more performance.
@True60RS Says:
More tech insight please!

The Mercedes Sidepods look like they were smash in in an accident, Just do not look right on an F1 car.
@WRXMAN-ms2mm Says:
Front wing outwash is a minor accomplishment for Mercedes that can be mimicked by the rest of the field if it hasn't been done so already and just not been displayed during testing. Same logic applies to smoothing cockpit turbulence. Based on the collective wisdom of the experts on various channels if and only if Mercedes has properly re-engineered the under floor* and diffuser** and reduced weight*** and achieved proper chassis balance**** and massaged the suspension***** the exposed aero from front to back that we all can see can be made to support these foundational performance elements. To give them a competitive car. That is a big mountain to climb in the off season. As according to Mercedes they dropped the ball on * and ** and *** and **** and *****. If they have achieved this mammoth task it will truly be impressive. Their power unit is the only rock solid component they have. Ferrari achilles hell is supposedly their engine with its non split turbo and tire degradation which is supposedly tied to weight and chassis balance. Not as big a mountain to climb but the engine is the hill they may die on. There is no way to go to a split turbo. Aston Martin is the dark horse the truly unknown commodity in the mix. They have rebounded in spectacular fashion and appear to have a car that has the potential to be a podium contender occasionally and top five consistently. The essential "NEWEYIZATION" of the upper aero side pods combined with the Mercedes power unit makes this a good bet. As Alonso stresses cars to their design limits based on pundits commentary the durability of the Mercedes power unit will be put to the test. For Alpine basically the same discussion applies as for Aston Martin with a splash of Ferrari engine issue. They however have a split turbo so they have more apparent room to improve reliability. Red Bull's margin of victory it would appear has likely been reduced but not eliminated. Evolution of a proven winning design is the least complex task. And the great equalizer no matter how great the car may be is the launch followed by "the first corner" followed by the remainder of the first lap where even the greatest car and driver on the grid can be compromised or eliminated as history has shown repeatedly. LOL

I’ve been closely following most of the technical stuff this year so far and I must say that you’re analyses and understanding and the explanation has been among the best on the entire platform. Good work please keep it up.
@farkdangler Says:
haven't heard anywhere that merc will ditch zero pod so I'm not sure what your talking about.
@WjC00LEY Says:
Mercedes sound like they will keep their zero pod, but just implement more of the floor edge / down washing towards the rear diffuser.
