The Most Dominant Race Win In Modern F1

????

Winning margins in Formula 1 are usually measured in seconds. Occasionally, in a wet race, we get a race won by more than a minute. But sometimes we've needed another unit of measurement altogether. In the latest of Autosport's 'Short View Back to the Past' series, Chief Editor Kevin Turner looks at when Damon Hill won by two laps #f1 #damonhill #formula1 FOLLOW us online: Website: https://www.autosport.com/ Facebook: http://facebook.com/AUTOSPORT Twitter: https://twitter.com/autosport Instagram: http://instagram.com/autosport Thanks for watching - please like, share and comment, and subscribe!

The win by a lap that probably surprised everyone at the time was Michael Schumacher taking the third win of his career, the opening round of 1994, Brazil. People knew that Benetton had been racking up the miles in testing preseason, but nobody was taking a bet against Ayrton Senna. Although Senna qualified on pole, the Benetton had better race pace and leapfrogged the Williams at the first pit stops. Schumacher gradually extended his lead to ~9 seconds, even lapping Senna's team mate, Damon Hill (who was running third), when Senna spun and stalled the engine while trying desperately to catch the German. It left people slightly readjusting their expectations for 1994. Senna clearly wasn't going to have it all his own way in 1994. Sadly, as we all know, he was killed 2 races later amidst the very dark weekend that was Imola

Well, it wasn't dominant tbh. Hill was the fastest and would have won nevertheless, but when every other car breaks down and a Footwork is on the podium, you know the race wasn't a normal one. A win 2 Laps infront of 2nd Place Michael Schumacher would have been one to remember. A dominant win was Hill in Suzuka 94. ;)

We must also remember the incredible Jim Clark who won by 4 min 54 at the Belgian GP in 1963!

In a season where nothing went right for him, Hill suddenly got the luck he desperately needed all season in one race...
@aleksej79novosibirsk Says:
0:45 really? by strategy? Yeah right it does nothing with Schumacher being 10 times better driver than Hill.
@ciaronsmith4995 Says:
The smart drivers just back off when they have the race wrapped up so we'll never really know.
@traviseastough2675 Says:
I have this race taped on VHS , Hill had that car hooked up and humming in that race , they showed slow mo shots of him going through the Senna chicane with the car four wheel sliding the whole way through . looks totally insane . I had planed on going to the race , I could get tickets but the only accommodation available was a 5 star hotel suit so I ended up going to the first race in Melbourne a few months latter which Hill won as well .
@BOABModels Says:
This was also the last race Ferrari drove with the iconic number 27 (and 28) which is unlikely to return unless Hulkenberg gets signed by them any time.
@snobey Says:
A lot of street tracks had a very good last race. Adelaide, Valencia, Sochi
@hugeiftrue4224 Says:
I was at this race as a toddler, sat atop my Dad’s shoulders. Apparently I kept taking my ear muffs off to hear the cars, and kept pushing my brother out of the way every time Dad lifted him up to see the cars. I’ve been an F1 tragic ever since.
@Rasscasse Says:
Fascinating. Thank you for this.
@tiadaid Says:
This is why I roll my eyes when people say the old days are better...it's crazy to think how unreliable cars back then.
@TheMrFishnDucks Says:
This is awesome. Fantastic to see this history of F1. Thanks for the video. Keep up the good work.
@zephyr5615 Says:
Damon Hill also won the first race of the 1996 season, the Australian GP at Melbourne, this means he won two consecutive races both of which were the Australian Grand Prix but held at different venues.
@TheOriginalStix Says:
Interestingly, the last ever race to take place on Adelaide's classic layout also saw a victory by more than a lap - At the American Le Mans Series' Race of a Thousand Years on New Year's Eve 2000, which ended up being shortened from the scheduled 1000km due to time constraints, Allan McNish and Rinaldo Capello won by a staggering 21 (yes, twenty-one) laps in a similarly attritional race. The winning car was the iconic Audi R8 in a special crocodile livery, and sadly the event's 9-year deal was cancelled after the first year due to a political falling out. I was at that race, and knowing it should have been a regular thing makes me sad to this day.
@jadhamizan Says:
Could've shown that Coulthard clip instead of talking about it...
@eamonahern7495 Says:
I watched it live. I got up very early in the morning to see it. 1995 was the first year Irish TV covered all the races live.
@BBKing1977 Says:
"... Max Verstappen and Red Bull's recent domination." I suppose you could call it domination. I prefer to refer to it as "sanctioned cheating".
@ankhayratv Says:
So there are records Max will probably not be able to beat: 5m12.75 and 2 laps.
@cyberfutur5000 Says:
the longer I live the more I like and respect Damon Hill, parts due to learning more about his father, who might have been the coolest guy to ever grace this planet. Also I really thought both the most dominant wins by time and or laps would have been some Fangio thing in the 50's... the more you know..
@corpsecoder_nw6746 Says:
Meanwhile in Monaco 2021, every car including 18th placed Yuki Tsunoda lapped both Haas cars.....

Stop saying a short view back to the past twice!!!!
@deeacosta2734 Says:
Imagine if Williams had given Newey some ownership in Williams.
@allenmurray7893 Says:
I'd rather you showed the actual scenes from the race rather than just talk about it, but, good video; very informative.
@mclarensaleenf7 Says:
This was interesting as I began watching in 2007 due to the hype Lewis brought. I always believed his ‘08 wet Silverstone win was the largest winning gap in “modern times” (which I’d gauge from 1990 and later). He beat 2nd place Heidfeld by over 1 min and lapped all but 2nd and 3rd. It also wasn’t really a race of attrition. Sure many driver’s were spinning all over but the podium mostly drove well. Was just an incredible performance and possibly the best drive I’ve ever seen live! Really enjoyed learning about this race though!

Did he say Mark Schumacher ?
@denzel9086 Says:
And remember despite this, the F1 nostalgia buffs hammer home on what a "golden" era the 90s were. Way better than the modern era. Yeah right lol
@Nchinnam Says:
He was so fast they had to fix the audio and re upload it
@BrotherJP333SP Says:
The FW17 was probably the fastest car in '95. I think Schumacher once said he thought the '95 Ferrari had championship potential as well.
@jacekatalakis8316 Says:
Wasn't this the last Australian GP to allow cigarette ads on the cars or did F1 get an exemption from that? Australia outlawe cigarette ads starting in 96, and left several V8 teams scrabbling for sponsors (hello there Glen Seton) as well as bike teams too, I remember Brundle's roll at the 96 Aussie GP as having the stars on the Jordan, not the B&h logos but that may be the Mandela efect at work
@y_fam_goeglyd Says:
I must admit, as a Damon fangirl, I laughed myself sick when Alesi took Schumacher out. Talk about poetic justice! I know the win was essentially a dry version of Monaco '96 or a repeat of the year Patresi won (I'm crap at remembering dates. Considering I spent a long time studying history, it's rather ironic), but it didn't stop me enjoying it! At least he showed the world what he was capable of. A seriously underrated driver, and not just in my humble opinion, it's in many other people's too. IMHO, he's a 2x champ, for obvious reasons, especially considering what he'd had to do for the team in '94.
@PrinceOfCats5 Says:
I remember seeing Morbidelli's Footwork from this very race up for sale online a few years ago. Finished 3rd. Wonder who bought it in the end?
@Kuchenblech_Mafioso Says:
Now with 100% more audio
@williambrown1480 Says:
Leave out Red Bull Max verstappen titles because both his race against the rules change the Race in 2021 again the rules. Over spent against the rules in 2022 should be disqualified from 20.22race
