Why the 2022 F1 Regulation Changes Worked

????

Did F1's 2022 regulation changes work? Or is it much of the same as the Hybrid Era? With new rules put in place to improve racing, spectacle and make the grid more competitive, we can finally look at the last year of racing to determine whether they were a success. Luke Smith, F1 Reporter, takes a look at everything from the technical regulations, to the issues teams faced, and what the future of F1 looks like. 0:00 Regulations and Budget Caps 0:47 Downforce and Dirty Air 1:58 Porpoising 2:30 Overtaking 3:22 Podium Domination 4:01 F1's Future #F1 #F12022 #Formula1 FOLLOW us online: Website: https://www.autosport.com/ Facebook: http://facebook.com/AUTOSPORT Twitter: https://twitter.com/autosport Instagram: http://instagram.com/autosport Thanks for watching - please like, share and comment, and subscribe!

Are the cars slower than before?

its horrible in 2023..

The rules were a complete failure and this video amounts to nothing but wishful thinking heading ahead hoping teams will manage the regulations until closing the gap. There was no season more competitive than in 2009 measured by qualifying time gaps, not overtakes. If you really want more "competitive racing", i.e. random results, look no further than IndyCar or the lower tier Formula leagues. FiA needs to get the fuck out of the way of team engineers who are better at car design.
@whiteandnerdytuba Says:
They haven’t worked. With a budget cap there should be more freedom for designers not less. The same teams are still in the same places

People here comparing 2022 to 2009 and 2013 seasons, but they are forgetting the main difference between 2009, 2013 and 2022. The 2022 rules were supposed to make overtaking and following the car in front pretty easy but the rules made it worse than 2021. Don’t even get me started on the coat cap, Redbull get nothing but a slap on the wrist for exceeding the cap, how would that prevent other teams from doing the same.
@PbPomper Says:
I think this season was really close when you consider the major rule changes. Normally you see a huge gap when introducing them. Max was simply in a league of his own this season. Perez finished behind Leclerc. Ferrari and RB had closely matched cars. Ferrari was a bit better in qualy and RB in race pace.

A new ruleset always starts with a bigger spread of the field and it wasn't as big as I expected it to be this year. With the rules settling in, and the budget cap slowly having effect on the big ones over the next few seasons, I expect a very promising 4 more years for this ruleset. A lot better at least than the 8 years with the previous ruleset.
@MyTruckstop Says:
Maybe I am dated watching this sport for over five decades but this is suppose to be the drivers championship but the constructors have proven the constructors championship is more vital. Maybe both. Pull the wings off full power manual trans for drivers championship one race and all tech for constructors second race per weekend. Any driver whines about anything kicked off the circuit. Plenty of talented drivers available maybe without deep pockets but true characters.
@mini696 Says:
There's zero innovation in F1 now. The technical battle has been dead for years.
@ierbutza21 Says:
Same as 09 and forward,since then only 2 teams(Brawn was pre-Merc so i count them with merc) have won,granted the mid-late 2000 went aero crazy and a change was needed but since then its been hard to enjoy.
@hwilmore Says:
And redbull still found a way to cheat.
@ianmaclean3422 Says:
The overtake percentage was not valid as a good thing because a lot of the slower cars where struggling with porpoising because of some stupid rules 🙄
@michaelstankiewicz6617 Says:
Overtaking is not the only thing we want, but close racing. I think we should take a good look at DRS, as the advantage it provides is actually too big on longer straights. I would much prefer to see an overtake taking place in a braking zone versus one getting done on the straight. This would also provide the lead car with a better ability to defend the position, leading to more actual close racing. I don't think DRS should be removed entirely (although there is an argument for this at some tracks like Baku), but a reduction in its effectiveness. Reducing the amount of the rear wing which opens?
@Livlifetaistdeth Says:
To be frank It was embarrassing. Dumbing the cars down and running in to old problems like porpoising, that have already been solved in the past, without allowing the teams being allowed to truly innovate all while cow towing to their new sponsorship over lords has made me reevaluate F1. My opinion is, it's just not as cool as it was or could be. But F1 goes in cycles and we've had a good run hopefully it get better.
@christians4395 Says:
If I wanted to watch 20 similar looking and performing cars go round a track I’d watch f2. This is f1. I expect a showcase of human engineering brilliance that will take a car and driver package as quickly as possible around a circuit. What I want is slowly being taken away
@joepzenz Says:
The fact is the rules greatly improved what the on track racing lap after lap. Just because Ferrari bottled the championship and Mercedes did not fully understand their concept doesn’t mean that the rules did not improve on what they wanted to. It’s just salty fans complaining because RB got it right
@mauriciokilo Says:
What FIA wants is competitivity. But what they got with those rules was a dominance by one team by far, again. And that wont change in 2023.
@KillRoy117 Says:
In an effort to bring closer racing, Max comes away with a dominant victory in the driver's championship much like Lewis' did in his time with Merc. The racing is closer, but the teams on the grid still cannot keep up with the top 3. How long before people get borednof Max winning like Lewis did?
@Wizzkidwas Says:
We didn't get a close title fight in the end, but most of that is actually down to Ferrari's incompetence, I don't think it would've gone down to the last race, but it would've at least been closer
@markrowley2739 Says:
The rule changes exposed Wahmilton anyway. No vastly superior car = no title.
@mrdraw2087 Says:
Overtaking has become too easy actually. As much as I like to see Verstappen win, 15 wins in such a tight season is not good for Formula 1. Sure, Ferrari messed up big time, but my main objection is that the fastest car on race day almost always wins nowadays. Qualifying has become meaningless. So, please get rid of DRS!
@etcarief Says:
Could we see the 2022 rules implemented without the ground effect implementation but still maintain the closer battle
@bhaskard8405 Says:
You must be kidding right, the rule changes were horrible, they were supposed to even the playing field but ended up doing the worst. The mid field is no where closer to the top team. 17 of the 22 races were won by Redbull and only 7 drivers were on the podium and only 5 won a race.
@danielvilliers612 Says:
As a Mclaren fan, I was very disappointed. I could at least enjoy the fight at the top t the start of the season. Then after the break, RB and MAx completely dominated the championship and it was boring again. Hopefully next year we have closer competition.
@davedice4688 Says:
If you ever find yourself mentioning, especially if you’re promoting, midfield battles, then you’ve failed. No one, and I mean no one, cares about the “midfield battles” unless it’s the only thing going on on track. Which is was this year. Record overtakes? Yeah, don’t care about that either. Why? Because the vast majority were mid and back field markers, and the DRS is way too powerful. DRS isn’t even needed anymore, since the cars “can race more wheel to wheel now,” right? F1 is failing year after year and you’re just putting lipstick on a pig at this point. How about instead of being their mouthpiece, you hold their feet to the fire? Unless, of course, you’re lacking the guts to do so. I’m betting that’s it. Just easier to smile, huh?
