I think it was kinda needed in some ways as The Boks had gone through their own very real slump in 2016/17 with that massive thumping from the ABs to come back to the heights of 2019/BIL tour and now the ABs had their slump, their own Bok hit job at Twickenham and subsequent WC final, to miss out on glory by only a point. It's re established the rivalry in a real way for me. The game is about many teams and players, nice when your team wins but feel for the loosing players.
