He got to the quarters in Brisbane, beat De Minaur (Top 10 for a reason imo, 11 now, but still, he’s really good), and took Zverev to a tiebreaker, maintaining form, intensity, and putting in some genius shots throughout. And that quarterfinal loss to Thompson saw him with match points in the second set, same with the second set against Zverev which saw him with multiple set point opportunities. I mean, it was weird when he exited Roland Garros, because he didn’t really retire, per se, he left the door open for a comeback next year even though he said it was unlikely. But he’s still good, he’s still a force. Will he be back to his old form? Of course not. But I think he can still win tournaments and go a decent way in majors (far even). Maybe he just needs more time. Whatever happens, when he really wants to retire, he’ll let us know, and I just don’t think he’s quite done that yet based on what he’s been saying recently.
