I have no doubt that they let calls go when a team is up, and call more fouls when a team is down. But rarely (it happens, but maybe 1/20-25 times) do they call something that wasn’t even there. The put back by KAT was over the cylinder, but the foul in the back was weak on that steak but still a foul. I think the issue does not lie in the refs experience or knowledge of the game, but rather the incentive they are given by the NBA higher-ups to make a game close, which is why we see so many comebacks nowadays. Trailing teams will get softer fouls and leading teams will have some that don’t get called. It’s a way of maintaining interest but also flow of the game, sadly. If they called every foul games would take 4-5 hours and we would be back to a few years ago where shooters got every call. But if they call none of the small ones when they matter teams will erupt. It’s a tough line to balance.
