The win by a lap that probably surprised everyone at the time was Michael Schumacher taking the third win of his career, the opening round of 1994, Brazil. People knew that Benetton had been racking up the miles in testing preseason, but nobody was taking a bet against Ayrton Senna. Although Senna qualified on pole, the Benetton had better race pace and leapfrogged the Williams at the first pit stops. Schumacher gradually extended his lead to ~9 seconds, even lapping Senna's team mate, Damon Hill (who was running third), when Senna spun and stalled the engine while trying desperately to catch the German. It left people slightly readjusting their expectations for 1994. Senna clearly wasn't going to have it all his own way in 1994. Sadly, as we all know, he was killed 2 races later amidst the very dark weekend that was Imola

Well, it wasn't dominant tbh. Hill was the fastest and would have won nevertheless, but when every other car breaks down and a Footwork is on the podium, you know the race wasn't a normal one. A win 2 Laps infront of 2nd Place Michael Schumacher would have been one to remember. A dominant win was Hill in Suzuka 94. ;)

0:45 really? by strategy? Yeah right it does nothing with Schumacher being 10 times better driver than Hill.

I have this race taped on VHS , Hill had that car hooked up and humming in that race , they showed slow mo shots of him going through the Senna chicane with the car four wheel sliding the whole way through . looks totally insane . I had planed on going to the race , I could get tickets but the only accommodation available was a 5 star hotel suit so I ended up going to the first race in Melbourne a few months latter which Hill won as well .

This was also the last race Ferrari drove with the iconic number 27 (and 28) which is unlikely to return unless Hulkenberg gets signed by them any time.

I was at this race as a toddler, sat atop my Dad’s shoulders. Apparently I kept taking my ear muffs off to hear the cars, and kept pushing my brother out of the way every time Dad lifted him up to see the cars. I’ve been an F1 tragic ever since.

Damon Hill also won the first race of the 1996 season, the Australian GP at Melbourne, this means he won two consecutive races both of which were the Australian Grand Prix but held at different venues.

Interestingly, the last ever race to take place on Adelaide's classic layout also saw a victory by more than a lap - At the American Le Mans Series' Race of a Thousand Years on New Year's Eve 2000, which ended up being shortened from the scheduled 1000km due to time constraints, Allan McNish and Rinaldo Capello won by a staggering 21 (yes, twenty-one) laps in a similarly attritional race. The winning car was the iconic Audi R8 in a special crocodile livery, and sadly the event's 9-year deal was cancelled after the first year due to a political falling out. I was at that race, and knowing it should have been a regular thing makes me sad to this day.

the longer I live the more I like and respect Damon Hill, parts due to learning more about his father, who might have been the coolest guy to ever grace this planet. Also I really thought both the most dominant wins by time and or laps would have been some Fangio thing in the 50's... the more you know..

This was interesting as I began watching in 2007 due to the hype Lewis brought. I always believed his ‘08 wet Silverstone win was the largest winning gap in “modern times” (which I’d gauge from 1990 and later). He beat 2nd place Heidfeld by over 1 min and lapped all but 2nd and 3rd. It also wasn’t really a race of attrition. Sure many driver’s were spinning all over but the podium mostly drove well. Was just an incredible performance and possibly the best drive I’ve ever seen live! Really enjoyed learning about this race though!

Wasn't this the last Australian GP to allow cigarette ads on the cars or did F1 get an exemption from that? Australia outlawe cigarette ads starting in 96, and left several V8 teams scrabbling for sponsors (hello there Glen Seton) as well as bike teams too, I remember Brundle's roll at the 96 Aussie GP as having the stars on the Jordan, not the B&h logos but that may be the Mandela efect at work

I must admit, as a Damon fangirl, I laughed myself sick when Alesi took Schumacher out. Talk about poetic justice! I know the win was essentially a dry version of Monaco '96 or a repeat of the year Patresi won (I'm crap at remembering dates. Considering I spent a long time studying history, it's rather ironic), but it didn't stop me enjoying it! At least he showed the world what he was capable of. A seriously underrated driver, and not just in my humble opinion, it's in many other people's too. IMHO, he's a 2x champ, for obvious reasons, especially considering what he'd had to do for the team in '94.
